General Mladen Markac underwent stent surgery on his heart in an Amsterdam hospital some 20 days ago and is now recovering well, his lawyer Goran Mikulicic told Hina on Monday after some media in Croatia reported about the poor health condition of the general who is standing trial in The Hague before the International Criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
The lawyer stressed that his client had not suffered a heart attack.
The situation was considerably serious three weeks ago, when Markac felt pains in his chest and therefore he was admitted to the Amsterdam hospital where a stent was placed in his heart, the lawyer said.
He added said the stenting was performed on time and that Markac's heart was not damaged.
After the surgery, Markac was transferred to the prison hospital for a few days, and now he is in his room in the ICTY detention centre.
According to his lawyer, Markac will appear at the continuation of his trial before the UN tribunal on 24 February.
