Polling stations close in Croatia for first election of its MEPs

The polls closed at 7 pm on Sunday throughout Croatia at which over 3.7 voters were eligible to elect 12 deputies to the European Parliament (EP) who will represent Croatia in that body from 1 July, when Croatia joins the European Union, until the next regular EP election in the entire bloc scheduled for 2014.

The ban on electioneering, which went into force at midnight on Friday, expired with the closing of the polling stations.

The State Election Commission (DIP) will release preliminary results at 2145 hrs Sunday.

The Commission reported earlier in the day that by 4 pm, 14.63% of the electorate had attended the polls or 445,000 eligible voters in this, their first EU parliament election.

No major incidents have been reported from the polling stations.

There was just one electoral constituency for all of Croatia and voters were presented with 28 slates - 27 party slates and one list of 12 citizens. Nineteen slates were proposed by individual parties while eight slates consisted of candidates proposed by coalitions.
