President Ivo Josipovic said in an interview with Croatia's broadcaster HTV on Sunday evening that it would be difficult to imagine that a meeting between him and Serbia's President Tomislav Nikolic could be successful in the wake of Nikolic's most recent comments.
Nikolic had told the Tanjug news agency that Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were led by people who do not wish to cooperate with Serbia.
"They are looking for an excuse not to cooperate with Serbia, Croatia has filed a suit for genocide, its path to the European Union is open and all that is missing is to start negotiations with Serbia about property owned by Serbs, unpaid pension allowances and confiscated apartments. Or on (Operation) Storm which Croatia celebrates instead of mourning like Serbia is over Srebrenica", Nikolic said.
"We too mourn Srebrenica. We admit that it was genocide which President Nikolic isn't doing", President Josipovic said. "Naturally, we celebrate Storm as our victory which put an end to the dream and ambitions of a greater Serbia, and I regret every innocent victim, including the Serb civilians who were either killed or were victims of crimes which Croatia's judiciary needs to punish", he added.
Speaking of announcements that Slovenia would block Croatia's EU accession, Josipovic voiced hope that newly elected President Borut Pahor would choose Croatia as one of the first countries to visit and that they would discuss the Ljubljanska Banka issue on that occasion.
