President Ivo Josipovic said on Thursday the initiative by the chairwoman of the National Committee overseeing Croatia's accession negotiations with the European Union, Vesna Pusic, for additional effort in order to complete the negotiations in June, was well-intentioned, pro-European and contained many usable elements.

"The initiative is first and foremost well-meaning, pro-European and it has a lot of usable elements. Of course, there is always room for modification and agreement with the government, because it is the one in charge of (the negotiations), but it's very clearly a well-meaning initiative aimed at completing the negotiations as soon as possible," Josipovic said, but would not say how he would respond to the initiative.

According to the media, Pusic has said that all political quarrels should be left aside until the EU entry talks are completed, and that she has sent letters to Josipovic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor proposing an agreement so that by May 20, when Croatia is due to submit a report to the European Commission, the remaining benchmarks for the closing of the negotiation chapter regulating the judiciary and fundamental rights could be fulfilled and so that a diplomatic and political offensive in key EU members could be launched.
