Easter masses celebrated in Croatia and neighbouring countries

The president of the Croatian Bishops Conference, Djakovo-Osijek Archbishop Marin Srakic, conducted Easter Mass in the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek on Sunday.

The Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, celebrated Easter Mass in the Zagreb Cathedral.

The service in Zagreb was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic.

Most years, Western Christian churches and Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on different dates, however, this year Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter on April 24, the same day as the rest of Christendom.

The Serb Orthodox Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana, Jovan Pavlovic, celebrated Easter Mass at the Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Zagreb.

Metropolitan Jovan briefly addressed on the ICTY verdicts against Croatian general Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac. He said it was not up to him to comment on those verdicts. "We do not take pleasure in anyone's pain, we sympathise with all those who lost their loved ones and all those who are suffering and are praying to God to free them of that state. How you judge others is how you will be judged," the Metropolitan said commenting on the Hague war crimes tribunal verdicts.

Zadar Archbishop Zelimir Puljic served Mass at St. Anastasia's Church in the southern city of Zadar.

Easter masses were also celebrated in Split, Dubrovnik and other towns across Croatia.

The Archbishop of Sarajevo, Cardinal Vinko Puljic, celebrated Easter Mass at the Sarajevo Cathedral.

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade, Stanislav Hocevar, celebrated Easter Mass at Belgrade's Church of Christ Our Lord.
