The United States supports Croatia's aspirations for European Union membership which is critical, as well as its role in Europe and the region, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said after talks with Croatian President Ivo Josipovic in Washington on Tuesday.

Clinton said that Josipovic's visit to the USA was very important and that before meeting with her he had a very good meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden and other officials in Washington.

She also mentioned his visit to Chicago, where she was born and grew up, adding that she knew that a big Croatian community lived in that city.

Josipovic said that "the US support and friendship has been very important for Croatia since the very beginning" and that his meeting with Secretary of State Clinton was "very fruitful".

Late on Tuesday afternoon local time, Josipovic was to meet Republican and Democrat members of the Congressional Croatian Caucus, Senator Mark Begich, who is of Croat descent, and members of the Croat community in Washington.
