The water level of the Danube river in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar reached a level of 6.60 m at 10 am Wednesday and so Croatian Waters sounded the red alert along the entire Danube river front.
"Even though the water level has not gone over the 6.80 m red alert level, due to the extraordinary circumstances, the decision was made to sound the red alert" the head of the flood defence team for the Vuka river in Vukovar, Mario Spajic, told the press.
He confirmed that the water level of the Danube was rising by 1.5 cm each hour but it seems that the maximum level of the flood wave heading toward Vukovar will be lower than the historical maximum of 7.20 m.
Croatian veterans from Zagreb have joined forces in filling sand bags in preparation for the flood wave heading toward Vukovar after flooding much of central Europe.
"We're engaged in filling sand bags and will work until the evening hours and then we will return to Zagreb as experts have assessed that any additional forces won't be necessary" a veterans' representative, Damir Jasarevic, told the media.
Vukovar Mayor Zeljko Sabo visited veterans working of flood protection activities and thanked them for their efforts.
