Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec confirmed on Saturday that he would meet with Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic in Brussels on Wednesday for private talks on a compromise solution to the Ljubljanska Banka issue.

"We want to find a compromise to the Ljubljanska Banka issue," Erjavec told POP-TV.

"It's possible to find a solution and for the Slovenian parliament to ratify Croatia's accession treaty with the European Union at the session which ends on March 8," he said, declining to confirm information that the outlines of an agreement on the bank issue were visible.

He reiterated that Slovenia could not ratify the treaty unless the lawsuits filed with Croatian courts against the defunct Slovenian bank were dropped.

Otherwise, the financial consequences could be tough for Slovenia because it would have to pay "between 800 million and three billion euros, depending on interest" in damages for foreign currency savings if the lawsuits succeeded, said Erjavec.

He reiterated that the foreign currency savings issue was the result of the break-up of the former Yugoslavia and that it was, therefore, a succession issue but said a compromise with Croatia was possible.

Speaking of the current political crisis in Slovenia, Erjavec said early elections would be a very poor solution.
