Parliament Deputy Speaker Vladimir Seks said on Friday that 19 years ago today, when Croatia declared its independence and he held the same post, he and a huge number of people did not even consider that such big deformations and mistakes would happen or that crime and corruption would take such hold.

Speaking on Nova TV's evening news, Seks noted that "sinking into the past does little to help," but said that he "should have been a little more careful (then) and paid more attention to certain signals because in that idealism we simply disregarded that there existed such organised clan interests that, bowing to the golden calf, gravely humiliated the true Croatian veterans and idealists who were creating and building the Croatian state".

He added that "the creation of every state is accompanied by euphoria, which diminishes criticism", underlining that "fortunately, and, I would say, at the last minute, the Croatian government and politics as well as the prime minister and the responsible people in Croatia who are deciding about its future today realised and understood and launched a truly strong and determined battle, and we have caught the last train's last carriage".

Asked how to convince young people, who should vote for the first time at the next parliamentary election, to go to the polls, Seks said young people should be convinced to vote regardless of who for because this was their country, their homeland, their state, and that they should shoulder the burden of responsibility for Croatia's future.

Asked how to make Croatia smile again, Seks said Croatia's politics should honestly address the entire people, adding that this was the case now and that such honesty was imperative.

He said it was also imperative to admit to one's mistakes. Asked if this meant also to seek forgiveness, he said that "in a way, one should also seek forgiveness for lack of alertness and lack of doing".

In response to a question from the anchor, Seks said this was "indeed Croatia's last chance to say 'enough' (and that) now its either us or them".

Asked about the outcome of the ongoing fight against corruption, he said it would certainly be "us and not them".
