European Union Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said on Wednesday she had sent a new letter to the Croatian government demanding swift amendment of the law concerning the implementation of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW).

I have sent a new letter to the Croatian government today and expect swift and smooth amendment of that law, Reding told the press in Brussels.

She delivered a lecture on the rule of law at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels on Wednesday, mentioning the importance of the full application of the EAW.

Late in June, Croatia passed a law, popularly dubbed Lex Perkovic, limiting the application of the EAW to crimes committed after August 2002.

Reding sent a letter to Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic in late July, saying that what Croatia had done on June 28, by adopting amendments to the EAW law, was in contravention of EU legislation and should correct it.
