Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor commented on Thursday on moves by trade unions following Wednesday's ruling by the Constitutional Court that there were no grounds for calling a referendum on labour legislation.
"Nothing can be solved in the streets, so I call upon the trade unions to begin dialogue with the employers. That's the only way to go," Kosor told reporters after attending a meeting of the Konavle Municipal Council, held to mark Municipal Day.
Citing official statistics for September, which showed that industrial output increased 3.3 per cent in relation to August, Kosor said that this indicated that "some things are improving".
"Not everything is gloomy and hopeless as some would want, and we have changed a lot of things through the Economic Recovery Programme. Many on the political scene are hindering us from carrying out the programme in its entirety," the Prime Minister said.
Calls by the Social Democratic Party for the government to step down, in conjunction with plans by the trade unions for a general strike and street protests, lead to one goal -- to prevent the completion of EU membership talks and maintain the standstill for the next few years, Kosor said.
