The Domestic Affairs and National Security parliamentary committee on Monday concluded that it would talk with the heads of each of the institutions that submitted reports regarding the phone records affair -- Office of the Council for National Security and Technical Operational Centre and Police Directorate -- after which a direct inspection would be conducted of the said institutions.

"We discussed the reports and concluded that we should speak to the heads of these institutions. After that, we will conduct an inspection of the institutions too", committee chairman Miroslav Tudjman of the opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said after the three-hour closed session.

He said the meeting would reconvene again on Tuesday stating that it was too early to say whether there had been any unlawful activities in the affair.

He added that the committee had not discussed any deadlines to complete the task but that the proceedings should be conducted thoroughly.

Asked whether the committee would talk with chief state prosecutor Mladen Bajic seeing that when the affair was made public, Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic had claimed that the entire police operation had been conducted in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, Tudjman said that now that introductory discussions had taken place the committee would come up with a working plan.

Reporters were interested whether any contentious issues had been raised during the session due to allegations that the reports, classified as highly confidential, differed in content.

Social Democratic Party (SDP) representatives to the committee Igor Dragovan said that members were not allowed to discuss the proceedings.
