Following the announcement of a strike by the Academic Solidarity union of tertiary education and science workers, the Science and Education Ministry on Thursday appealed to all "planning any activities" to first and foremost care about students' interests and show "at least a minimum of academic solidarity."

"The Ministry is stressing once again that all those fighting against the adoption of the law are fighting against a completely free education," the ministry said in a statement, citing parts of a draft bill on high education, in an attempt, as it said, to explain some individuals' attempts to delude the public.

The ministry cited that Croatian graduate and post-graduate students at public universities are entitled to have their entire enrolment fees financed from the state budget, provided that they comply with their obligations as defined by the university's general act and by acknowledging the minimum criteria as defined by the rules on student standards.

The assembly of the Academic Solidarity union on Tuesday decided to initiate a strike of education workers in protest against the latest high education bill. Exams will not be held during the strike and scholars and university employees will suspend their other work commitments as well, the union said.
