Former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's brother Vinko refuted on Sunday some media's reports that about HRK 3 million (approx. 405,400 euros) had been found in his bank accounts, saying he would ask the courts to protect his "human dignity."
"This is yet another lie and smear," the parish priest from Solin said in a written statement delivered to the media in response to the media allegations which he labelled as "fabrications."
Sanader said that as far as he knew, nobody had checked any bank accounts and that if someone from the authorities had done so on a court order, they could have seen that the amount in them was lower than the one mentioned by the media and that it belonged to the Our Lady of the Island parish, which he said had bank accounts for more than 20 years and that as the parish priest, he was authorised to manage the money in them.
Sanader said it was lie that anyone from the Church, as alleged by the press, had given any information about the parish's accounts.
He said that every citizen, including him and his family, were entitled to their "human dignity" and that he would contact the judiciary in order to prove that the public was being misinformed.
Meanwhile, the former Croatian PM has been in extradition custody in Austria since his arrest on December 10. He was arrested on a warrant issued by Croatian authorities which want him on suspicion of abuse of office and corruption.
