Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic concluded his visit to New York on Friday after addressing the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
We have great expectations of the UN as the only universal framework for seeking common solutions to international crises and current challenges. But we must ask ourselves - has the UN done enough and what can we do together to improve its work? - Milanovic said among other things.
He said that this year was very ineffective with regard to the UN's ability to prevent conflicts and protect civilians, referring to the situation in Syria. He added that Croatia shared the European Union's position on the violence in that country.
The priority is to put an end to that conflict, ensure humanitarian aid and work out a plan for the economic and political stabilisation of the country. Further fighting will only increase the suffering and make it more difficult to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis. We must also remain committed to a political transition that will satisfy the democratic wishes of the Syrian people. Crisis resolution is our shared responsibility, he said.
Milanovic thanked the UN for its role in Croatia's struggle for independence. He said that Croatia had made great progress since the early 1990s, joined NATO in 2009 and was due to become the 28th member of the European Union next July.
Croatia has undergone a comprehensive and successful political, economic and social transition within a very brief period of time. That is why we have a special understanding and first-hand experience concerning the interrelatedness of peace, security, development and human rights promotion. Today we share that experience with the countries of Southeast Europe as well as with countries emerging from conflict, the Croatian PM said.
Croatia wants its neighbours to travel the same road successfully; it does not want to take on the role of regional mentor, but wishes to help with its experience because a peaceful and prosperous neighbourhood is in Croatia's interest, Milanovic said.
