6,500 fans gather on Mt. Sljeme ahead of men's slalom

About 6,500 spectators gathered on Mount Sljeme a few hours before the start of the first leg of the men's World Cup slalom scheduled for 1430 hrs, the race organisers reported on Thursday.

The Sljeme event has drawn leading Alpine skiers, including Croatia's star Ivica Kostelic.

Austrian Marcel Hirscher will open the race, and he will be followed by Swede Andre Myhrer. Kostelic will start as No. 3. Competing in the slalom are also German Felix Neureuther, followed by Jean-Baptiste Grange of France, Cristian Deville of Italy and Mario Matt of Austria.

Austrian skier Marlies Schild on Tuesday won the women's World Cup slalom on Mount Sljeme overlooking Zagreb.
