33.87 pct of voters go to polls by 4 p.m.

The State Electoral Commission (DIP) says that 1,293,264 voters, or 33.87 per cent of the electorate, went to the polls by 4 p.m. on Sunday to choose the next president of Croatia.

The DIP cited figures received from 94.63 per cent of the 6,550 pollingstations in the country, adding that the turnout was eight per cent lower thanat the presidential elections in 2005.

The DIP said voting was proceeding peacefully, reporting only a minorincident in Zabok, north of Zagreb, where the police had to intervene for abreach of the peace, and minor violations of the electioneering ban.
