Despite the fact that they live in the economic, cultural and political centre of the country and despite the highest GDP per capita, the citizens of the Croatian capital are among those dissatisfied the most with their quality of life, according to the results of the latest National Happiness Index survey.

In July, the index in Croatia was was 64.6 points.

The index was 62.2 points in northern Croatia and 63.1 in Zagreb.

The poll, carried out by Banka magazine, the Hendal market research agency, and the Allianz insurance company, shows that with 63.1 points, Zagreb residents, next to the citizens of northern Croatia, are the least happy when compared to their countrymen. They are at the bottom of the scale when it comes to personal development and social environment.

Even the citizens of undeveloped parts of the country (Lika, Korduna, Banija) show the bigger optimism.

The reasons of this desperation among the residents Zagreb are living costs – the highest surtax rate, the highest parking costs and the highest accommodation rent, high prices of communal services and water, and the kindergarten price. Unemployment, real estate purchase and the health service are among the three biggest problems in Zagreb.

The National Happiness Index ranges from 0 to 100 points, 0 standing for the worst situation possible. Anything below 50 points shows a negative trend.
