The police pressed charges against two demonstrators who had destroyed a flag of the European Union during Saturday's rally in Zagreb in protest against guilty verdicts the UN tribunal delivered in the case of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac.

The police arrested a 25-year-old man and a 40-year-old man on suspicion that they tore the EU flag which was taken down from a pole in the Zagreb main square.

According to the police report on Sunday, the arrestees were released after the police questioning.

The two men face charges of damaging the reputation of foreign countries of international organisations. This offence carries a prison term ranging between three months and three years.

Apart from this incident and another one in which a flare was set off, the rally organised by war veterans was peaceful. According to organisers and media, a few ten thousands of protesters gathered in Zagreb's main square, and the police estimates put the crowd at 7,000.
