Croatian crime police chief Vitomir Bijelic told the RTL commercial television network on Friday evening he had information that former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader had planned to board a Munich-Washington flight on Thursday.

Sanader was arrested on an international warrant in Austria on Friday afternoon at the St. Michael tollbooths on the A10 motorway, about 100 kilometres from Salzburg, and was taken to a Salzburg court.

The Austrian police are preparing a statement on his arrest and Bijelic said he would comment on the arrest after its release.

The Austrian news agency APA cited police officials at St. Michael as saying the arrest was made without problem.

Sanader was in a car with his brother, who was not arrested, the spokeswoman for the Salzburg prosecutor's office, Barbara Fechtinger, told APA.

Sanader will be taken to investigative prison in Innsbruck, but Fechtinger was unable to say when, said APA.
