A protest against signs in both Cyrillic and Latin on public institutions in Vukovar, organised by the Initiative for the Defence of Croatian Vukovar ended shortly before 1230 hours Wednesday with an announcement that a new protest would be staged at the central square of this eastern Croatian town on Thursday morning.

The president of the Initiative, Tomislav Josic, criticised Vukovar Mayor Zeljko Sabo who said that some people wanted "Vukovar to become Beirut".

"We are protesting peacefully, we are not bothering anyone, we are not bothering Serbs, nor are we insulting them," Josic said.

The protest will resume at 9AM Thursday.

Before the protest ended, the protesters arrived in the Ovcara Victims Square where they said a prayer for all those who were killed and went missing in Vukovar and Croatia during the 1990s war.
