The Croatian President's Office confirmed on Friday that its website had been down for a while late Thursday night following a hacker attack.

"On Thursday 9 February, at about 2240 hours, a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack began against the Internet site of the Office of the President of the Republic of Croatia, making the website unavailable for a while. The situation stabilised about an hour after midnight," the President's Office said in a statement, adding that the necessary steps would be taken to protect the website against future attacks.

According to media reports, responsibility for the attack was claimed by members of the Anonymous hacker group, who announced their next attack for Saturday.
