Parliament's decision on whether a referendum on Labour Act amendments will be called or not can be expected at the end of this or early next month, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on the Constitution, Vladimir Seks, said on Tuesday.

He told Croatian Radio he would soon convene a meeting at which the committee would move that parliament either call the referendum or not, or that parliament ask the Constitutional Court to say if the referendum's question was in compliance with the constitution as a prerequisite for the referendum.

"This means that the Croatian parliament, depending on that answer, should adopt at the end of September or in early October the final decision on whether the referendum will be called or not."

Commenting on Seks's statements, union leader Ozren Matijasevic said they were attempts to buy time and postpone the adoption of the referendum decision in parliament.

"The Croatian parliament must adopt a decision on the referendum. What the parliament deputy speaker (Seks) is announcing, that the Constitutional Court will be asked to state its position, is a tactic so that parliament never decides on calling the referendum, as we know when, how and at what pace the Constitutional Court is in session," said Matijasevic.
