The parliamentary Committee on the Constitution, Standing Orders and the Political System on Tuesday endorsed a proposal from the ruling coalition that the Constitutional Court should decide whether or not it was still necessary to hold a referendum on government-sponsored amendments to labour legislation after the government had withdrawn them from parliament.

The proposal was carried by a 7-6 vote.

The ruling coalition put their proposal citing the Referendum Act. The opposition argued that there was no cause for the Constitutional Court to arbitrate between the will of the citizens and the obligation of Parliament to call a referendum after the necessary number of citizens' signatures was collected for that purpose.
