Health Minister Rajko Ostojic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said that 22 billion kuna, a fund available for public healthcare in the past year, is sufficient for the functioning of the system provided that he succeeds in solving the debts inherited from his predecessor Darko Milinovic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

The new minister told reporters on Friday that the debts in the health sector left by the previous government had surprised everyone.

The obligations of the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance (HZZO) that are 60 days overdue reach HRK 2.1 billion, and the entire debt in the health sector exceeds five billion kuna, Ostojic said, adding that healthcare needed a clear start.
