There will be no European sanctions against Croatia, the Croatian parliament will align the law on the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) with EU legislation, but there are so many more important problems than this, President Ivo Josipovic said on Saturday.
Josipovic was speaking to reporters during a traditional diplomatic grape harvest at Jastrebarsko, just southwest of Zagreb, which was attended by diplomats from about 30 countries.
"I wouldn't discuss sanctions, I don't think they will be included on the agenda. I'm confident that the Croatian Sabor will align our legislation with what we have signed," the President said.
"I think all this is unnecessary, but I don't think there will be problems. Croatia is perceived in the European Union as a responsible country," he said, noting that by amending the EAW law, the government had tried to ensure that Croatia and its citizens were treated in the same way as others "but it has turned out a bit different."
Josipovic said that Croatia was enforcing the EAW law. "We have already carried out a great deal of arrest warrants. It's not that we don't want to implement what we have signed. There are much bigger and more important problems that this, for instance, the economic crisis, building a new Europe as an answer to the crisis. With such important tasks at hand, we shouldn't be wasting our time on this."
