Croatia does not need the European Union's monitoring, President Ivo Josipovic said on the island of Pasman on Friday when asked by the press if the monitoring was actually a failure of the EU accession negotiations.

"Croatia has done enough, even a lot in relation to one or two years ago," Josipovic said, adding that Croatia would not be perfect once the negotiations were over but still have weaknesses.

"Which society doesn't have weaknesses? The progress tendency is very evident and we don't need monitoring. But if European countries decide on it, that's their decision and we will deal with it."

Asked who should sign the accession treaty, Josipovic said this was a technical matter and that it was important to first complete the accession negotiations.

"The accession treaty will be signed by the incumbent Prime Minister at the time, after which the ratification law will bear the signature of the Speaker of Parliament and eventually, in the National Gazette, the signature of the President of the Republic, who will sign the law in accordance with the Croatian Constitution," Josipovic said, adding that he would like PM Jadranka Kosor to sign the treaty as soon as possible, even tomorrow.

Addressing the residents of Pasman, he said they should not fear EU accession and that "it will be up to us how good we will live."
