The Zagreb branch of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) failed to choose its new leader at an election on Sunday as none of the four candidates received more than 50 per cent of the vote.

Davor Bernardic, a member of Parliament and former head of the SDP Youth Forum, received 44.22 per cent of the votes.

Ivo Jelusic, who filled in as head of the SDP Zagreb branch after Milan Bandic left the party, captured 35.64 per cent of the ballots.

Bernardic and Jelusic will vie for the post in the election runoff scheduled for next Sunday.

Zeljka Antunovic, a member of the SDP Presidency, took 19.99 per cent of the votes, while Slavko Tecic got 0.23 per cent.

Over 75 per cent of the 5,326 SDP members in the Croatian capital took part in the vote.
