The defence team for Croatian general Ante Gotovina has asked the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia's (ICTY) Appeals Chamber to issue an order to the United Nations to search for, locate and produce documents to the Gotovina defence which could decisively impact the findings in the Trial Chamber's judgement, the ICTY reported on Monday.

In its filing submitted on Friday, December 2, the defence said the UN is the last known organisation to have been in possession of certain artillery documentation believed to have been used in the artillery operation in the Indictment area by the Croatian Army during Operation Storm. The defence therefore asked the ICTY to order the UN to produce the said artillery logs or else explain what happened to them.

On 15 April, the ICTY found generals Gotovina and Mladen Markac guilty of war crimes against Serb civilians in areas formerly held by Serb rebels, committed during and in the aftermath of the 1995 Operation Storm, and sentenced them to 24 and 18 years in prison respectfully.

The defence team appealed on 1 August.
