Branimir Glavas received on 16 August the final verdict handed down by Supreme Court which sentenced him to eight years in prison for war crimes in the cases dubbed "Garage" and "Salotape", one of Glavas's attorney has said.
"Glavas was served with the final verdict on 16 August when a 30-day deadline for submitting a constitutional appeal started to run," attorney Ante Madunic said. He reiterated that the defence would try to contest the Supreme Court verdict by using all legal means available and reveal the truth about the events in Osijek during the war.
Madunic refuted media claims that on July 30 Glavas refused to take the verdict by which the Supreme Court upheld the ruling of the court of first instance.
The Banja-Luka based daily Glas Srpske on Friday cited the Zagreb County Court spokesman who said that Glavas had refused to take the verdict, after which it was decided that the verdict be served by the Interpol.
Spokesman Kresimir Devic, however, said today that this was taken out of context.
It is the position of the Justice Ministry that until Glavas is served, the process of executing the final verdict cannot be launched in Bosnia-Herzegovina, to where Glavas, who also holds Bosnian citizenship, fled immediately before the Zagreb County Court handed down a verdict against him and thus escaped serving his prison sentence.
In case of dual citizenship, the convict can choose where he wishes to serve his sentence. If the convict decides to serve the sentence in the country in which the ruling was not handed down, the verdict must be adjusted with the legal regulations of that country.
