Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic commented on the phone records scandal on Wednesday, stressing the need for further professionalisation of the secret services given the problem of information leakage.

When asked if Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko was still the actual boss of the secret services, considering the fact that he had received confidential information about printouts of phone records before the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, Pusic said he had certainly received it before the parliamentary National Security Committee, of which he is a member.

"Obviously, when speaking about professionalisation of the secret services, there is still a lot of room for improvement, because there is a problem with information leakage outside the official channels of communication. Both the former and new director have (good) references, and the problem here is getting information through illegal channels and not formal channels. That is worrying more than anything else in this case," Pusic told a press conference organised by her party, the Croatian People's Party (HNS), about the importance of including young people in active political life.

When asked if this scandal could harm Croatia on its path to EU membership, Pusic responded in the negative, saying it was not a such serious scandal as perceived in Croatia. "The member states don't see it as a major issue," she said, adding that the scandal did not hurt Croatia's image in NATO and that the head of the EU Delegation in Croatia had not asked her anything about it either.
