European Parliament leaders have decided to invite Croatian observers to join members of the European Parliament (MEPs) at the beginning of April.

The decision was made on Tuesday by the Conference of Presidents, the governing body of the European Parliament which consists of the heads of the political parties represented in the European Parliament.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz is now expected to send an official letter to his Croatian counterpart Boris Sprem asking him to send 12 observers.

Croatia will have 12 observers in the European Parliament until its accession to the European Union, which is scheduled for July 1, 2013. After entry, Croatia will need to organise elections for 12 MEPs.

The chairman of the European People's Party (EPP) group, Joseph Daul, said on Tuesday he was looking forward to Croatian parliamentarians coming to the European Parliament.
