The defence team for former fire commander Drazen Slavica, charged with the disaster in Kornat when a wildfire took the lives of 12 firemen, on Wednesday asked Zadar County Court to clear the defendant of the accusations.

"Drazen Slavica did not violate any regulations, as suggested by the prosecution. It was also not explained how he could have any influence on the eruptive fire that took the lives of the firemen," defence lawyer Cedo Prodanovic told the court in his closing statement.

The lawyer said that the system of firefighting had been in disarray at the time of the tragedy.

Therefore, he believes that the defendant Slavica was chosen to be the the scapegoat in this case.

The prosecutor in the case of the 2007 Kornat tragedy on Tuesday requested Zadar County Court for an "appropriate" prison sentence for Slavica whom he considers responsible for the death of the twelve fire-fighters and serious injury of the only survivor, Frane Lucic.

If found guilty Slavica could be sentenced to 3 to 15 year's in jail.
