On Saturday, March 31, Croatian cities and towns will go dark at 8.30 pm, turning off lights in some of their streets and buildings, thus joining in the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) Earth Hour campaign. This year, the campaign is held under the slogan "I Will If You Will".

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage people around the globe to contribute to the protection of the planet's natural resources by doing small things in their daily lives that help save energy.

At the central campaign event in Zagreb on Saturday, at 8.30 pm lights will be turned off for an hour in the city's Cvjetni square and the nearby streets.

Earth Hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2012 will take place on March 31, 2012 from 8:30p.m. to 9:30p.m., at participant's local time and the theme of this year's drive is "Dare the World to Save the Planet".

Croatian Construction and Planning Minister Ivan Vrdoljak and the head of the WWF project for Croatia Petra Boic-Petrac on Friday called on Croatians to participate in the initiative.
