The Association of Croatian Volunteer Physicians 1990-1991 on Wednesday pressed charges with the Office of the Osijek County Prosecutor against 19 Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) officers, led by General Veljko Kadijevic, for artillery attacks on the Vukovar Hospital 20 years ago, the association's president and wartime and current director of the Vukovar Hospital, Vesna Bosanac, said on Thursday.

Bosanac said that apart from the artillery attacks, the charges also covered the destruction of ambulances, the killing of hospital staff and patients, and the wounding of doctors and nurses who were helping people wounded in the shelling.

"We have explained everything in detail, and we also have evidence," Bosanac said, adding that so far no one had pressed charges for the shelling of the Vukovar Hospital.

A seminar on the Vukovar Hospital in 1991 started in this eastern Croatian town today, bringing together some 70 participants from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who spoke about the health system in war and in other crisis situations.

According to data from the Vukovar Hospital, 3,470 wounded people were treated in the Vukovar Hospital during the Serbian military aggression on the town, and more than 2,500 operations were performed in the hospital at the time.

The seminar was part of events commemorating the suffering of Vukovar residents in 1991, which this year are being held under the slogan "Brave People". The seminar was organised by the Association of Croatian Volunteer Physicians 1990-1991 and the Vukovar Hospital.
