Two jailed for 2009 fatal train derailment accident

Former Croatian Rail (HZ) executive Ivan Medak was sentenced by Split County Court on Friday to four years in prison for a July 2009 train derailment accident at Rudine, outside Split, in which six passengers were killed and 55 injured.

Jozo Bazina, an adviser at the Intrade company, received three years in prison, while the other three accused were acquitted. Medak and Bazina were found guilty of participating in the purchase and use of the flame retardant TG-300 which caused the train to derail. They have a right to appeal.

HZ has paid 3.9 million kuna (513,000 euros) in damages to the families of the passengers killed and 1.2 million kuna (157,000 euros) to those injured in the accident.
