Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor on Monday launched the third section of the Lika and Dalmatia gas pipeline network, namely the trunk gas pipeline from Gospic to Benkovac.

The construction work on the 91.3 km gas pipeline from Gospic to Benkovac cost EUR 31.8 million.

"This project is very important for Croatia to be able to strengthen its economy, namely secure its energy stability by 1 July 2013, when Croatia is expected to enter the European Union," Kosor said at the launch ceremony held at the Plinacro plant in Babindub near the central Adriatic town of Zadar.

According to Evelyn Panis of EVN Croatia, this is one of the biggest foreign direct investments in Croatia.

The Croatian gas transmission system operator Plinacro recently reported that a contract had been signed for the construction of the fourth section of the Lika and Dalmatia gas pipeline network, namely the trunk gas pipeline from Benkovac to Split. The fourth section will be 96 kilometres long.
