Addressing citizens attending a celebration of International Workers' Day in Varazdin, Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic said that the most successful, happiest and most competitive countries were those that had ensured a high degree of protection for their workers, adding that his party's message in that regard was: Decent pay for decent work.

Offering citizens his best wishes for Labour Day, Milanovic said they should fight for a better Croatia, go to the polls, respect Croatian institutions, choose the best to represent them and beware prophets in elections.

"We should stop looking for excuses for not being able to make Croatia one of the best countries in Europe, and before entering the EU we must define what we want and we must stick to that plan. If we want success and satisfaction, we must assume responsibility," the SDP chief said.

The celebration of Labour Day was organised by the Varazdin City and Varazdin County SDP branches, which prepared 3,500 servings of traditional bean broth and organised an entertainment programme.

One of the guests at the SDP's Labour Day celebration was the president of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Radimir Cacic, who told reporters that the value of work was something Croatia needed to rediscover.

The next government will most definitely make work, competence, education and honesty its priorities. Croatia needs all of that, Cacic said.
