Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic said on Thursday that the investment projects announced earlier in the day by the government were only a list of wishes the government had not made come true even though it could have.

"This is a reminder of what the government has failed to accomplish, and to shower the public with such projects is neither fair nor realistic. The projects in question are necessary and relevant for Croatia, but the sources of funding are lacking and the SDP will make effort to find them and determine priorities if it wins the voters' trust," Milanovic told a news conference, citing among the priorities the Rijeka-Budapest railway corridor and the energy sector.

He recalled that the highway linking continental Croatia with the coast would not be built to Ploce this year and that little had been done regarding the Peljesac bridge. Only the hydroelectric power plant Lesce was opened, and the balance of the Sanader and Kosor cabinets is very poor, Milanovic said, adding that the Croatian Democratic Union-led government had mostly finished projects launched by the coalition government led by the SDP.

Unfortunately, Croatia will be one of the few European countries that will not see economic growth this year, and we need an economic turnaround and concrete decisions, the SDP chief said.

Asked about the privatisation of state-owned companies such as the HEP power supplier, the Hrvatske Sume forest management company and the Hrvatske Vode water management company, Milanovic said that they were national resources and should not be privatised, even after admission to the EU.

Companies that were privatised were privatised badly, particularly INA, Milanovic said, but added that an injection of fresh capital would do good to the state-owned Croatia Osiguranje insurance company.
