The Croatian Parliament (Sabor) held a special session on Wednesday to mark the 22nd anniversary of the establishment of the multiparty legislature, and on that occasion Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem said that the latest amendments to the Sabor's standing orders were aimed at enhancing parliamentary debates and transparency of its work.

I believe that we will restore the lost part of confidence of Croatian citizens regarding possibilities of parliamentary democracy, Sprem said.

He said that 30 May 1990, when the first multiparty Parliament was inaugurated, had throughly changed people's lives in Croatia and triggered off a series of political processes in entire southeastern Europe.

Sprem said that Croatia was proud of its peaceful transition from a single-party system into a multiparty system of government.

He recalled the historic decisions of the Sabor such as the decision on Croatia's sovereignty and independence and the one to sever its ties with the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Since then Croatia has passed a long road, and the country has undergone a series of big changes, with parliamentary democracy remaining a constant of the Croatian politics, he added.

In attendance were former parliament speakers, government officials, representatives of the Office of the Croatian President, religious dignitaries, foreign diplomats, and other prominent figures.
