Bosnian police on Tuesday destroyed an unidentified explosive device discovered earlier in the morning in downtown Mostar, not far from a recent explosion that destroyed a monument in honour of Bosnian forces where fierce battles were fought between Croats and Bosnian Muslims during the 1990s war.
According to crime squad chief, special police forces managed to destroy the device using water canons as the explosive was discovered in a cafe in a densely populated section of town.
The device was deactivated without any damage caused and police have cordoned off the area and are collecting evidence.
Local press reports have said that a mobile phone had been tied to the explosive device which is assumed to have been the detonator.
Ten days ago an explosion destroyed a monument in downtown Mostar that was dedicated to Bosniak soldiers. The incident has led to growing tension between Croat and Bosnian Muslim political parties who have not been able to agree on holding local elections or amendments to the city's statute.
