The Croatian parliament on Wednesday endorsed a proposal that in the next two years up to five Croatian soldiers continue to participate in Operation ATALANTA, a military operation led by the European Union Naval Force to help deter, prevent and repress acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia.

Croatia participates in the operation in accordance with a Croatian Parliament decision of December 2009.

By participating in ATALANTA, Croatia is actively contributing to the peace operation, Defence Minister Branko Vukelic said in parliament.

Presently, Croatia has one officer serving in the operation command in Northwood, Great Britain, one who joined the crew of an Italian Navy ship and one who is expected to join the crew of a Spanish Navy ship any day.

Deputies also discussed and said they would support the ratification of an agreement between NATO parties on cooperation concerning atomic data.

Earlier on Wednesday most of the parliamentary groups supported the government's proposal to send another 30 Croatian troops to Afghanistan.

The Istrian Democratic party and the regional HDSSB party were against the decision.
