The president of the biggest Opposition party - the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) - Tomislav Karamarko, has said that the decision to sell the Croatia Osiguranje insurance company and the Croatian Postal Bank (HPB) was "a tragic move".

At an election rally in the eastern Croatian town of Osijek on Tuesday evening, Karamarko said the incumbent government did not know how to fill the state budget and instead of opening new jobs and creating a surplus of value it is introducing new taxes and selling "the last of the family silver."

The HDZ is running for seats in the European Parliament together with the Croatian Party of Rights Ante Starcevic (HSP AS) and the Pensioners' Bloc at the elections scheduled for 14 April.
