Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic will make an initial appearance before judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague on Friday to enter a plea to the charges against him, the UN court said on Wednesday.

According to the schedule of hearings, Mladic is due to appear in a courtroom at 10 am on Friday. He is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws or customs of war committed during Bosnia's 1992-1995 war.

Mladic was arrested in Serbia on May 26 after 16 years on the run. He was transferred from Belgrade to the ICTY detention unit in The Hague's district of Scheveningen on Tuesday evening.

His extradition was carried out swiftly and secretively. There is no television footage or photograph showing his arrival in The Hague although hundreds of reporters and cameramen were waiting in Scheveningen on Tuesday evening to film his arrival.
