Former President Stjepan Mesic confirmed on Monday evening he had received some death threats, adding that given that this was an issue to be dealt by the police, his office immediately forwarded those threats to the police.

"These are some Chetnic games. They probably still think that Srebrenica can happen again. They don"t understand that this is over," Mesic told Croatian Television.

Earlier on Monday Interior Ministry spokesman Krunoslav Borovec told Hina that "Threatening messages have been posted on a Facebook group that was not founded in Croatia,"

Borovec said it was too early to say how serious the threats were.

The Novi List newspaper said on its website that Mesic did not receive the threats only via the Internet, but that in the past few days he also received threats in writing, assessing them as serious and reporting them to the police.
