Montenegrin police on Friday arrested the mayor of the coastal town of Budva, Rajko Kuljaca, deputy mayor Dragan Marovic, who is the brother of the outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Svetozar Marovic, and a dozen of their assistants on suspicion of conspiracy to commit crime.

According to media in the capital Podgorica, they are suspected of involvement in a housing project which is being built by a Russian company. The arrests attracted nationwide attention, especially in the light of current changes in the Montenegrin government.

President Filip Vujanovic and the outgoing Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic would not comment on the arrests, saying that the matter was within the jurisdiction of the judicial authorities.
