The fight against corruption and organised crime and the enforcement of all laws cannot do harm to Croatia, but can only benefit it, and not just for the sake of completing accession negotiations and joining the EU, but because we all want Croatia to function as a country based on the rule of law, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor told reporters in Zagreb on Saturday.
Kosor said this when asked to what extent statements by former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, that in Croatia he faces a political trial orchestrated by the government and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, could harm Croatia on its path to the European Union, since it was now under special scrutiny before closing negotiations in a policy area dealing with justice and fundamental rights.
Kosor said that the fight against corruption and organised crime was also in compliance with the constitutional principle that all people are equal before the law and there are no untouchables. She said that the government would continue strengthening all institutions to ensure full compliance with the laws.
When asked if she was afraid of Sanader, as he claimed in an interview with an Austrian newspaper, Kosor said she could not and would not comment on any cases involving people who are suspected of anything.
