Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic announced on Monday that under a new police law special departments would be set up to deal with privatisation-related crime and war profiteering.

The minister made the announcement at the Police Academy after a swearing-in ceremony for 869 people who had become police officers after completing a nine-month retraining programme.

Ostojic said that additional attention needed to be devoted to privatisation-related crimes and crimes of war profiteering because under the Constitution those crimes are not subject to the statute of limitations.

The minister said that the special departments would begin work as soon as the new police law was passed, adding that it was awaiting a green light from the European Commission.

Ostojic said that no additional staff would be hired for those departments. "The police have competent people who can do that work," he said.
