The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) on Thursday called on Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina to take measures aimed at protecting Croatian farmers and family farms and thus preserve domestic food production.

The HSS urged the Agriculture Ministry and the government not to discontinue communication with farmers, proposing to the minister to invite representative of the Croatian Chamber of Agriculture (HPK) and other organisers of farmers' protests in an attempt to try to find a solution to the present situation.

Disgruntled farmers, who in their ninth day of protesting in most continental counties, seek the payment of more than HRK 450 million in late subsidies and a correction of the purchase price for wheat, insisting it should not be under HRK 1.38 per kilogram, the wheat price in 2012.
