A five-member panel of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) high court of honour on Friday decided unanimously on the unconditional expulsion of former HDZ president and former Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor from party membership after they found her media statements detrimental to the HDZ's reputation and structure.

Panel chairman Florijan Boras said that in her public statements Kosor had undermined the existence of the bodies of this strongest opposition party.

The decision is not final and Kosor can appeal it within the next eight days.

Earlier in the day Kosor walked out of the session of the HDZ court of honour and while leaving the HDZ offices she told reporters that she found the procedure in which this disciplinary action was being conducted against her to be contrary to the party's statute.

The Zagreb city branch of the HDZ has no authority to launch proceedings against members of the party's presidency and other main bodies, and some of the members of the panel should not be there under the statute, said Kosor, who had attended the session in the company of her lawyer Krunislav Olujic.

The former HDZ leader accused the current party leadership of "sloppiness" in the case against her.
